A Verse to Memorise: God is Our Refuge and Strength
I love this psalm – it is so comforting and reminds me of the power and majesty of God. Yet He still stoops down to help and comfort us.
Look at what this verse tells us about God:
- He shelters us and protects us
- Our strength can come from Him
- He is there for us
- He aids us when we need help
- We can go to Him when we are in trouble
It is a great verse to memorise because often we can be discouraged and think things like, ‘Nobody loves me’, ‘I can’t cope’, ‘I need help’, and ‘How on earth am I going to get through this?’
But like a sword ready by your side, when you know scripture you can get it out to fight the doubts and discouragements that the devil brings against you – just like Jesus fought temptation in the wilderness.
You can quote this verse and remember that God is on your side, He is with you and you can go to Him for help, strength and refuge.
If you have a little more time you could also add the next couple of verses which are great – here is the whole passage:
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling.
Here’s a link to a great hymn based on this psalm and set to the tune of the Dambuster’s March. I’ve never actually sung this in any church but I used to love playing it at home on the organ! There isn’t any singing on the video so I’ve put the words below it.
God is our strength and refuge,
Our present help in trouble;
And we therefore will not fear,
Though the earth should change!
Though mountains shake and tremble,
Though swirling floods are raging,
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!
There is a flowing river,
Within Gods holy city;
God is in the midst of her – she shall not be moved!
God’s help is swiftly given,
Thrones vanish at his presence –
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!
Come, see the works of our maker,
Learn of his His deeds all powerful;
Wars will cease across the world
When He shatters the spear!
Be still and know your creator,
Uplift Him in the nations –
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

That Psalm is highlighted and underlined many times in my bible! It has been a great source of comfort to me during difficult times. When I remember Who is my refuge and from where I gain my strength, the troubles of this world are conquerable! Blessings, Joan
Yes it has been the same for me! 🙂
