Focusing on God To Take Away Fear

Recently I was worrying about something, and as I went to go and pray I decided to pray the Lord’s Prayer.

I do that more and more nowadays as a template for my praying, because when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, that was His answer.

As I prayed ‘Our Father, who art in heaven’ I realised I’m praying to God who created the universe, and the heavens are far bigger than my problem.

Then I prayed ‘Hallowed be Thy Name’ and I remembered that God is holy and righteous and faithful and He will look after me and everyone else that I care about. He is in control and will work everything for His good whatever happens.

It was amazing – by the end of the Lord’s prayer I wasn’t worried anymore! Just by focusing on God and thinking about His character.

I think that’s because the opposite of fear is faith, and to have faith we need to be like Peter trying to walk on the water and keep our eyes on Jesus. When we take our eyes off Him that’s when we begin to sink and be afraid again.

So I want to encourage you when you are afraid or worrying, to focus on God and who He is, like the Lord’s Prayer encourages us to do, and give your worries to Him remembering that He is in control, He loves you and is faithful.
