This Day, and That Day
I was reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan the other day, since we are going through it in our church’s home Bible studies, and I came across this quote from Martin Luther:
“There are two days in my calendar:
This day and that Day.”
This day and that Day.”
I absolutely loved this quote! And I kept thinking of it for days afterwards. It also had a good effect on my work habits!
This Day
We need to think about this day because that is the time God has given us right now to use. So often we put things off and think I’ll do that tomorrow, I’ll eat healthy tomorrow, I’ll tidy the house tomorrow etc!
But when we only think about this day it should have an effect on us – if this was the last day we had on earth how would we spend it? If Jesus was in the room with us and we could see Him, would we be doing anything differently? What’s the best way we could spend our time just today, not tomorrow, but today?
I also like it because it rules out the past, and the future. We shouldn’t be living in the past, but making the most of the time we have now. And we shouldn’t be worrying about the future, because we can spend so much time worrying about the future that we don’t use the time we have today!
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
That Day
‘That Day’ I take to mean when I stand before Jesus. What a wonderful day that will be! But also I wonder how many regrets I will have? If I stood before Jesus this weekend, would I wish I’d spent my week a bit differently? If I am called to give an account of what I have done with what He’s given me, will I be happy with that account?
This is a really good thing for us to think about. It is both comforting and hopeful and exciting, but also should challenge us to live for eternity, with a mind that is set on eternal things that last and not material things that perish.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 2 Peter 3:10-14
